Photographing this group of sustainable luxury resorts

The entire public areas of this hotel resort on Hainan Island are open to the elements utilising the traditional wooden screens I found across South East Asia when researching my book on wooden architecture.

I photographed the opening of this the first Chedi hotel in China. The Chedi sits within a green bamboo forest upon a hot spring tucked away in the hills between Ninghai and Ningbo a few hours drive south of Shanghai. I have photographed a number of resorts in this part of China and this is particularly bucolic and peaceful.

It features furniture and finishes inspired by found objects discovered by walking the shore - fishing nets, locally woven baskets and wood carvings.

The outside of The Castle Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel by Starwood looks remarkably like Mad King Ludwig’s Wagner-inspired Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria . Inside HBA Los Angeles have managed to design a series of interiors that intelligently mediate between the singular vision of the building and the varied requirements of a luxury resort.
